Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 3)

March 29th, 2008 9:50 am

Today I want to talk about what happened at the World Internet Summit between talks, “off-stage” so to speak. Please read my posts Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 2)   Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 1)  and Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 4) to get the full picture.

One of the speakers I really resonated with was Shaune Clarke from Canada. He has an interesting history. One of the talks he gave was about how to create intimate interviews. Not just run of the mill interviews but something different.

Shaune spent a lot of time outside the seminar room answering people’s questions. He has an amazing energy and is full of life and enthusiasm. There were two things that really stood out for me:

He talked about having to be totally present while interwiewing somebody. “Totally present” means that you are really listening what the person is saying. Your are fully focussed, they can see that they have your undivided attention.

You do not think about the next question. You listen attentively - and your next question may be derived from what they are saying and not what is next on your list. Be right there, in the present moment. You will pick up slight changes in their mood or tone, you will know what to focus on next.

All the above is pure yoga:

  • Be in the present.
  • One pointedness of the mind.
  • Full focus and attention.
  • Being sensitive to others’ needs.
  • Non-violence by letting the other person “be themselves”.

As Shaune stressed, these skils are not only great for interviewing but will improve your general communication as well. Your family will be be grateful when you start embracing those principles. Your relationships will really improve, trust and intimacy will increase.

So, let’s get to work!

I will talk about the second topic in my next post, see you then.
