Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 3)

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Today I want to talk about what happened at the World Internet Summit between talks, “off-stage” so to speak. Please read my posts Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 2)   Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 1)  and Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 4) to get the full picture.

One of the speakers I really resonated with was Shaune Clarke from Canada. He has an interesting history. One of the talks he gave was about how to create intimate interviews. Not just run of the mill interviews but something different.

Shaune spent a lot of time outside the seminar room answering people’s questions. He has an amazing energy and is full of life and enthusiasm. There were two things that really stood out for me:

He talked about having to be totally present while interwiewing somebody. “Totally present” means that you are really listening what the person is saying. Your are fully focussed, they can see that they have your undivided attention.

You do not think about the next question. You listen attentively – and your next question may be derived from what they are saying and not what is next on your list. Be right there, in the present moment. You will pick up slight changes in their mood or tone, you will know what to focus on next.

All the above is pure yoga:

  • Be in the present.
  • One pointedness of the mind.
  • Full focus and attention.
  • Being sensitive to others’ needs.
  • Non-violence by letting the other person “be themselves”.

As Shaune stressed, these skils are not only great for interviewing but will improve your general communication as well. Your family will be be grateful when you start embracing those principles. Your relationships will really improve, trust and intimacy will increase.

So, let’s get to work!

I will talk about the second topic in my next post, see you then.

Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 2)

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

As I said in Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 1)  I was searching for Yoga (or yogic moments) during the World Internet Summit which I attended recently. I have to admit, I did not listen to all the speakers. I may have missed some yoga gems.

Internet Marketing is a very male dominated field. Over 4 full days there were only two female speakers. I was hoping that they would have a different approach, maybe bring a softer touch to things but I am afraid to report that I found the opposite.

Still, amongst all the hype, hard sell and usual carry on were some great yogic statements. All the information below is extracted from my handwritten notes which I took during the event.

Ewen Chia:

You can’t be all things to everyone, the secret is to specialise in a certain market, do topics you love and enjoy (this is called affinity marketing).

Focus on one thing at a time.

Shaune Clarke:

Gain clarity of purpose and in your mind. You must know this is done, gain depth of confidence through “clear, vivid, mental experience”. Understand, empathise, emotionally connect with your audience, customers etc. Listen and be totally present in a conversation.

Allan Forrest Smith:

“What is the purpose of your life?” He also talked about the fact that we need time to sit and process information. Nobody is “sitting” anymore, just staring into space, daydreaming.

We need to reclaim time to build our own vision. He suggested to stop watching TV for a while and use that time.

Allan also talked about the fact that fear is based in the future, we worry about something that has not happened as yet, so usually all our worries are wasted because most things never occur. To remove the element of fear, we have to take action and bring ourselves into the “right now”.

Allan was the speaker who organised the huge fundraising drive for the preservation of the rainforest in Ecuador I spoke about in one of my previous posts. Check out his chosen charity here: http://www.pachamama.org/

Tracy Repchuck:

Follow your intuition – this is the path of least resistance. Money is energy and you are an energy and will attract money.

Say yes or no. “Maybe” stops time. A lot of accumulated “maybes” in your life cause you to walk through the world in “muddy boots”.

Your dreams are your life force, they will keep you motivated and moving forward. They will keep you energetic. What is your purpose, your bigger destiny – it is time to do it. Let us live for today, let us get the most out of today.

Debra Thompson Roedl:

You are spending Life! Wouldn’t you rather be spending money and living Life??

Don’t ignore your intuition. Ignore it and synchronicity will come into play. Something will come up that gives you a much clearer hint. Ignore that and the 2×4 will come out and hit you over your head.

Looking at all these statements, I can see a common thread:

  • Focus, in yogic terms one-pointedness of the mind, is very important and harder and harder to achieve in this crazy, overstimulating, multitasking world.
  • Ignore your intuition at your own peril. To me it seems that most people are far too busy to “hear” or “feel” their intuition. In most people it is a very fleeting, subtle feeling or knowing that gets drowned out in our everyday life. On top of that, it is not valued in today’s society, it is suppressed and discouraged. The “Secret” movie may have brought about some change. Nevertheless I think that it was preaching to the converted.
  • Living in the present moment, “being here now”. One of the cornerstones of yoga philosophy. Yesterday is gone, no point worrying about it, tomorrow is not here yet, can’t do anything about it yet, no point wasting time there, it may never come. Right here and now is where the action is, we can act, talk, feel, control what we do. Being present also avoids mistakes and accidents.  People feel very special when we give them our full attention.

In my next post I will talk about some more yogic moments I experienced off stage. Please also read Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 4)  and Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 3) .

What is Mexican Healing

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I met Darshna in January 2008 at an introductory workshop about Mexican Healing. I had never come across it before so I wanted to know more. Darshna kindly agreed to be interviewed by me.

Good morning Darshna, could you tell me how you got interested in Mexican Healing?

My name is Darshna and my history is very global. I am of Indian decent born in Africa but I lived in the UK since the age of six. In 2005 I crossed the world and decided to come and give Australia a shot, so I think I’ve pretty much covered most of the continents.

I came across the healing one evening when visiting a place called the Green Angel’s, a place where people gathered to play music, sing, read and just be in a community. The night I went some ladies were offering treatments from the Mexican Healing tradition. They had done some training in it already and they told us about two teachers who would be doing a talk and holding some workshops.

I had an amazing result with the treatments and wanted to find out more, so I went along to the talk and the next day turned up for the first workshop. I remember saying that although I had loved the treatments and was inspired, I didn’t think this healing was my path as it was a little out there. The funny thing is – I haven’t stopped using the medicine to help myself and others since that beautiful day four years ago.

Can you tell me a little bit about the history of Mexican Healing and the underlying Philosophy?

The Mexihka Medicina comes from Mexico, its roots are based on Filosofia Nauthl, Nauhtl being the ancient language of Mexico before the Spanish came to Mexico.

The basis of the tradition is that all things are linked, plants, oceans and rivers, the earth, the cosmic forces and us humans. We are all interdependent and we affect each other, with this in mind the medicina aims to bring back balance.

It works by treating everyone as an individual and treating the cause rather than just the symptoms. We treat on four levels: mind, body, spirit and soul.

We say the spirit is the life force and the soul is the auric body. Should these two be out of balance in a person through any trauma, then the mind and body will be affected.

The healing practices are not just about healing. The philosophy is a way of life, you get guidance to find yourself and what might be good for you and what not. The tradition has its own calendar and star signs that reflect a person’s nature.

Identifying your nature helps you to get to know yourself better and thus allows more harmony into your life. It has helped me to move away from things that caused me pain and anger, things that stopped me from growing further. It has allowed me to find my path and have the courage to let old beliefs go. I am very happy and each day is like a blessing.

In practical terms, what methods or processes do you actually use during the healing sessions?

We use Thalawyo, a very deep tissue massage that allows stagnant energy to be released from the body. The healer uses it also as a diagnostic tool to work out what is going on with the client.

Limpia is a beautiful treatment to remove energy that doesn’t belong to the client. It rebalances their energy. They are fantastic and I recommend them once a month for everyone.

Sustos are spirit retrievals, when someone has had an overwhelming or traumatic experience; a part of their spirit leaves them. A susto is all about recalling this part of the spirit back into the physical body, allowing the person to run on 100% of their life force again.

In the tradition we also hold Temescals. These are a type of sweat-lodge, for want of a better word, in the Mexihka tradition there are around 52 different ways to make a temescal. They are used to integrate us with our environment and the people around us. This ranges from healing after birth, resolving conflicts to healing various ailments.

What is the most exciting aspect of Mexican Healing for you?

The main reason I am passionate about the work and love practising it, is the fast response I see from people who receive a healing. The shift in energy and the release of emotional issues are amazing. The healing of serious illnesses can take more time but we have proven that if the person is willing then everything can be worked on. We have people in Europe, who are now healers in their own right, who have shifted cancer and bi-polar issues via the medicina.

Where can people contact you if they want more information or want to experience Mexican Healing for themselves?

I do my healing work  in Sydney, Australia.

One of my teachers will visit Australia in April. We will take appointments for healings with her. There will be talks and workshops as well as temescals.

For immediate appointments people can call me for healings.

Yoga Moments at the World Internet Summit in Sydney (Part 1)

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I attended the world Internet Summit in Sydney over the past weekend (13-16th March 2008). By chance I ran into one of my mentors, Yaro Starak from http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com

We had a brief chat and I told him that I was going to report about the World Internet Summit on my Yoga Blog. He was curious how I was going to go about this and then he went on to say something along the lines that it would be quite natural if you loved both…..

That comment really got me thinking. Yes, I love Yoga, every bit of it, for what it has been able to do for me during my life and the lives of others that I saw being transformed. It takes a lot of perseverance and discipline to get results with yoga but there can be instant changes as well. Sometimes these changes cannot be explained.

Like one young woman, many years ago, who came to my class, having suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for over 2 years. She spent most days in bed, could barely have a shower and get dressed, let alone do any housework. During that class we did a lot of breathing exercises. I gave her some very gentle postures to do and, quite frankly, I didn’t think she would return.

One week later she came back, all excited, she had been able to do housework, she was able to stay up for nearly a full day every day and she felt so much better. Her life had changed. I cannot explain this, it is not logical. I am simply grateful I was able to witness this transformation. I love Yoga.

But Internet Marketing? Loving Internet Marketing? How on earth could anybody love that stuff?

Then it dawned on me – yes, there are quite a few people who truly love internet marketing, they love the internet and the opportunities it has given them. They love marketing and they love the results they get from it. They love numbers, statistics and analysing things. They love to develop new ideas and try them out, they love sharing their knowledge. They can barely wait to jump out of bed every day. I could observe their excitement when they were talking on stage. These were all very successful people – collectively they have made millions.

So I decided to try and find yoga within the World Internet Summit – in things that were said, within people on and off stage, within the topics covered. That way, I thought, I might be able to start to like Internet Marketing and eventually love it like I love Yoga……and become good at it in the process.

Lesson learnt: it is much easier to become really good at something you love than something you don’t care about or even dislike.

More about my quest in my next posts. Please also read:
