In this post I want to explore some practical ways that may help to loosen your jaws and stop you from grinding your teeth.

Yoga is all about cultivating awareness. The first thing you can learn is to become very observant during the day. You need to become aware when you press your teeth together or even start grinding them slightly. Check out when it happens, what situations are causing you to react this way?

When your jaw is completely relaxed your bottom and upper teeth should barely have any contact. Whenever you feel your teeth clenching or your jaws tightening, try and “catch” yourself and deliberately relax them. The more often you practise this, the more of a habit it will become. You will start noticing sooner and sooner when you are tightening up again and relaxing will become easier. The relaxed intervals will become longer and longer and will hopefully eventually extend into the night.

Here are a couple of physical exercises you may want to try:

Try and have you lips really loose and make a “brrrrrr” sound. Only the lips should vibrate, don’t tense your neck or shoulders. Keep trying till your lips are really loose.

Massage the area around your jaws and cheeks, especially before you go to bed.

When lying in bed, use your tongue to touch the inside surface of every tooth – start at the bottom row, moving from the front teeth all along to the last tooth on one side, come back to the front, do the other side. Then do the top row the same way. Take your time and do it as slowly as possible.

Pout your lips like a fish and then pull them into a wide grin. Alternate a few times, then tap your jaw and cheeks lightly with your fingertips. It should feel like heavy rain coming down on your face.

I really hope that the exercises are helpful. Remember – no change happens until you take action!

Till next time,

Extraordinary happenings and ordinary people.

In a world where so much bad is reported by the media, fills our newspapers and television reports and shows, it’s no wonder that people crave for good news stories – not just stories – but real life events that have happened to others, in order to give them, the reader, renewed hope for their own lives.

It is my hope and prayer that as you read through this book your own hope for your life will be renewed and perhaps you will even begin to recollect incidences in your own life that truly show God has touched your life. If that is the case, I would love to know about it as I’m sure that the incidences within are not the ends of this story by any means. For as long as we breath and remain on this earth, God will always be involved in our lives, whether we realise it at the time or not. Sometimes it’s not till the ‘punch line’ occurs that we look up, or look back, and see His guiding hand upon our lives.

In looking back we begin to realise that what took place was not a co-incidence at all because through God ‘it happened by design’ – His design.

Thomas and I’ve been working at home for over 14 years. In that time I have been able to watch my daughters grow into young women whilst also running a full time business at home. It is a decision I’ve never regretted and it’s allowed me the time to follow my passion of writing and fulfil a life-long dream to write and publish books.

“It Happened By Design” will inspire you and make you think about those incidences in your own life that may well have been God-incidences - proof that God really does care about you and is interested in your every day activities..

Here’s what some of our readers have had to say:

After reading ‘Worth More Than Rubies’, I just knew I had to read Kathie Thomas’s next book ‘It Happened By Design’. ‘It Happened By Design’ is about God-incidences and I truly believe that this is what drew me to offer to read and review this book! The stories and lessons related by the contributors are inspiring and eye opening to say the least. I needed to hear the stories within to truly appreciate the wondrous gift I have been given.

‘It Happened By Design’ shows you another way to view the little things that happen in your life that you may consider a coincidence. Like needing $5 to pay for lunch and finding it in the bottom of your handbag. These aren’t coincidences - these are God-incidences. He is showing you his love and support in small, but important ways.

Whilst you can choose to read ‘It Happened By Design’ from cover to cover, I recommend that you let Him guide you to the story you need to read. Pick up the book, and just let it open and read the story related on those pages and hear the lesson they relate. That is the power of the stories related within the pages of this marvelous book.

We’ve all heard of the Law Of Attraction - well God-incidences are the true manifestations of this law. When you believe, and trust that He will provide - He will. My husband and I have always believed that if we trust in a power greater than ourselves - then all will be well. It was so nice to see that others believe and are rewarded in the same manner.

Kathie Thomas has done it again…. ‘It Happened By Design’ is an excellent read and incredibly motivational. Well done Kathie and Thank You for another great book.

From the Foreword, to the last word of the last chapter, Kathie Thomas’s latest book, It Happened by Design, captured my attention. I did not stop until I had read the entire book, front to back. The author’s writing style, combined with real-life stories, bring the pages to life. As the contributors told their stories about things that had happened in their lives that some might call co-incidences, but Thomas calls God-incidences, I was reminded of God’s love for each of us, and how nothing happens by accident. It’s all part of His plan. The book captivated my heart, and lifted my spirits. Thomas writes from her heart, and her words inspire the reader to be a better person.

It Happened by Design contains story after story that illustrate the fact that God is always working. This book is eye-opening and will train you to be more aware of God’s great love for you as He orchestrates the events of your life in a way that only He can. As you ponder the stories in It Happened by Design, you will learn to see God’s fingerprints in every aspect of your life. Prepare to be encouraged!

Have you ever experienced an amazing co-incidence in your life? One so amazing that later you ask yourself if perhaps it was the hand of God at work? Well, according to author Kathie Thomas, it just might be. She says that instead of a co-incidence, you may have experienced a God–incidence.

Kathie first heard the term “God-incidence” from her pastor a few years ago While listening to a sermon on how God used Joseph and his betrayal by his brothers to ultimately save the Hebrew nation, and how everything – every “coincidence” that occurred in Joseph’s life -actually moved him closer to his destined path, she realized that she too had experienced many such moments in her own life.

Kathie began searching the internet and found that many others were also having these same experiences. She asked others to share their stories. Those stories became a book – “It Happened by Design”.

It’s a wonderful book. Kathie has changed nothing in the retelling of the many stories sent to her. They ring with faith and truth. And as you read you realize that, just as Kathie says, the hand of God is moving in the lives of these individuals.

My favorite story is almost the last one in the book – Surprise! God-incidence. It tells the story of a woman who discovers God’s calling for her in a surprising way. As I read it, I felt tears come – and then an amazing peace. You see, I have been feeling a similar call as the one in the story – a call to reach out and bring God’s word to other women. But then I turn away. Surely God has another plan for a simple business woman from Arkansas? Then suddenly Kathie asks for friends to review her newest book. And I say I will – although I have never done such a thing before. And I read a story of a woman who hears God’s call and I know that this is the path I am to take. Co-incidence? Of course not! God-incidence! As Kathie shows so beautifully in her book – it happened by design.

Melodieann Whiteley, WealthTogether, Inc.

‘It Happened By Design’ is a touching account of God-related experiences as told by the people who experienced God’s personal intervention. I was moved many times and often required a Kleenex, as one poignant story after another unfolded before my eyes.

Each section is begun with a quote from the Bible which corresponds with the stories following, lending more impact to the personal narratives about to be read.

An incredibly stirring and satisfying read.

Debra Shiveley Welch, “Best Selling Author of Son of My Soul - The Adoption of Christopher, A Very Special Child - An Adoption Story - co-author Jesus Gandhi Oma Mae Adams”; scribe for Christopher Bullfrog Catcher http://www.DebraShiveleyWelch.net

While reading the compilation of encouraging stories contained in “It Happened by Design,” I had goose-bumps rising on my arms and on the back of my neck. At other times, the tears flowed freely, as I related to the God-incidences in my own life. My favorite story was of neighbor, the dog. I predicted that he was an angel sent to protect the scared woman on her walk home one dark night.

This book is a treasure, meant to be read more than once. It will bless you differently each time you read it! Thank you, Kathie, for providing a forum for you and your contributors to share their stories with us. Many more readers will remember and be thankful for the times God was there to provide for us and protect us from harm.

On our blog talk radio show today Charly and I had invited Dr. Sally Witt as our guest speaker. Dr. Sally has an amazing amount of experience in counselling and healing and uses many different approaches and techniques. She very much believes in seeing each person as an unique individual who will respond well to certain techniques but not respond to or even dislike others.

One of her specialties is working with fears and phobias and also helping people to stop smoking. Dr. Sally uses close to 60 different modalities or techniques to assist people to heal themselves.

I asked her whether there were particular modalities that were the “staple” of treatment strategies.

She said that NLP (short for neuro linguistic programming) was one of them. It is a technique that uses language to shift behaviour. This is the one technique that was made famous by Anthony Robbins.

She often uses hypnotherapy which is simply a means to get a person into a relaxed state and then initiating change by putting positive suggestions straight into their subconscious.

The third one that plays a big role is EFT (short for Emotional Freedom Technique). It is a method of tapping fingers on certain acupressure points, you get the benefits of acupuncture but without needles. I think the beauty is that once you know what to do, you can do it yourself.

We also talked about Yoga and how it is a great adjunct to all of the other modalities. It supports people between sessions, they learn extra techniques to manage their stress and over time develop enough inner strength not to reach for a cigarette as soon as the going gets tough.

Please go and listen to the whole interview, I think you will find it very interesting.

You will get extra support with the programme, like the ability to join a chat room, participate in live radio shows where you can ask questions and more.

Tooth grinding seems to be caused by various stresses which haven’t been dealt with during the day.

As a first aid measure there are some mechanical aids available which physically make the grinding impossible. What is available will depend on which part of the world you live in. It might be necessary to get some mechanical implement as a “first aid measure”.

It is cheaper and healthier in the long term to deal with the underlying cause. This will not happen overnight, but like with everything else - persistence and perseverance will lead to success.

Let us start at the beginning. You are feeling so stressed out and have not got a spare minute to even think about what is causing you stress?

Start by using the times when you are doing something that does not require your mind to be “present”. Examples are washing the dishes, washing the floor, standing in a queue at the bank or the supermarket cash register, while waiting to see the doctor, at the hairdresser…..

Start by asking yourself some questions:
What is causing you stress? Can you do anything to change the situation? Are you too hard on yourself, are you a perfectionist and cause a lot of the stress yourself? Is the pressure coming from within yourself or is it caused by external circumstances?

If this all seems to hard, you may want to see a counsellor or talk to a trusted friend.

Other things you can do to help you relax and cope with your stress:
Yoga, getting a massage, learn how to do a facial massage to relax the jaws and face, see a physiotherapist……

In my next post I will talk about some specific exercises you can do that might be of benefit.

Are you grinding your teeth during the night? A lot of people have no idea that they are grinding their teeth during the night. Especially if you are living by yourself you may not be aware that you are grinding your teeth while you are asleep.

Some of the symptoms may include headaches, neck pain, painful jaws or teeth. In some cases the grinding causes tinnitus (ringing in the ears). All sorts of tooth and gum problems eventually start to happen.

When you do your first yawn in the morning – is it painful to open your mouth?
Eventually your dentist may notice some typical signs on your teeth.

The grinding sound can be very loud and can be squealing, rattling or anything in between. Your partner might wake up from it. The pressure exerted by the teeth is anywhere between 300 to 400 kg.

It seems that the problem is usually caused by stress that has not been dealt with during the day.

There seem to be two types of “grinders”:

People grinding mainly their front teeth seem to be unable to deal with aggression and angry feelings during the day. They show a “poker face” all day long while “boiling” on the inside. Overnight they push the bottom jaw forward and then grind their front teeth.

The second group grinds their back teeth. They seem to be people searching for inner strength. They are often insecure, introverted and they don’t want to talk to anybody about their fears.

In my next post I will talk about how you can tackle the problem.

See you then,

We could start a long debate about TV -the pros and cons, whether it has educational value etc. Personally I am not a fan of TV at all. Our household didn’t have one till I was about 12 years old. We only watched a couple of shows on the weekend. I don’t own one at the moment, it has never been a big part of my life.

Anyway, I found some information which I want to share with you:

Researchers at the University of San Diego (USA) studied 546 children (aged 4 to 17 years old) and their TV viewing habits. Those children were already overweight.

The children in the study who watched more than 2 hours of TV a day had a 2.5 fold risk of developing high blood pressure. Those who watched 4 hours a day or more, had a 3.3 fold increase in the risk of developing high blood pressure. Of course, watching too much TV also increased the chance of getting even more overweight.

My opinion is that watching TV triggers a physical stress response. The longer you sit in front of the TV, the more sustained the stress response is, it becomes chronic. That leads to chronically elevated bloodpressure.

It would be interesting to know whether TV also increases blood pressure in children who are not overweight. My guess is that it might, but it may self-regulate again, once they get away from the TV. In overweight children the combination of increased weight and stress may lead to permanently elevated blood pressure for a number of reasons.

I am explaining the stress response and its effects in great detail in my upcoming new book which will be for sale shortly.

The lesson is: TV only in moderation for children and adults alike!

I listened to workshops and panel discussions. I watched some awsome yoga demonstrations. It is incredible what can be achieved with regular and very dedicated practice.

I will be sharing some of the information with you over time.

This morning I did a Blog Talk Radio Show with my business partner Charly Leetham and we were discussing Ashtanga Yoga during the first part of the show.

Go to the blog talk radio icon in the side bar and you can listen to the recording of our show. Also, go to http://www.stretchyourmindandbody.com/blog and have a look at today’s post over there, you will find links to videos and Ashtanga Yoga sites.
